Cal State San Bernardino Field Trip

Our seventh grade AVID students visited CSUSB this week! AVID students toured the campus, walked through a museum, and looked inside classrooms. For some this was some their first time on a college campus.

A huge thanks to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. Because of their generous donations we were able to fund this trip!

Team Building Friday Fun!

AVID isn't just about tutorials and binder checks! AVID students work really hard and are rewarded with Team Building Fridays. Games we play include Statue Maker, Randomized Wikipedia search, Beachball Bonanza, and more.

Students with C's and higher participate in these team building activities, while students with anything below work in a study hall. During that time, students get additional support to help them with assignments, emailing core teachers, and get guidance from their AVID teachers.

2017-18 AVID T-Shirts!

We are currently taking orders for our new AVID t-shirts! Once sales wrap up we will hopefully be getting these in by late October. Students will be encouraged and required to wear their t-shirts on Thursdays. By doing so, it is our hope to promote AVID and HJH's mission of college and career readiness!

If you are interested in ordering one, please contact one of the AVID teachers.

Tutorials

It's finally here! TUTORIALS! Starting this week, students have started the routine of Tuesday and Thursday Tutorials. Tutorials are designed to help students excel in their core classes by determining their very own point of confusion. They then collaborate to come to a resolution.

University of La Verne Tour

Eighth grade AVID students had another great opportunity visiting a California university campus earlier this month. Students were given a tour of La Verne by six knowledgeable university attendees. Tour highlights included visiting the dormitories, science lab, theatre department, library, and gymnasium. Our AVID students kept the tour guides busy with questions, many of which came from the students' preparatory assignments the week prior!

Socratic Seminar

Seventh and eighth grade AVID students participated in two Socratic Seminars recently. Students used Hamilton: An American Musical's "Cabinet Battle #1" and "Cabinet Battle #2" for topics. Students discussed issues brought up over 200 years ago in Washington's cabinet. These included: Should the U.S. help the French, create the National Bank and the beginnings of tension between the North and the South.

To prepare for the Socratic Seminar, students marked the text, answered questions, created a pro/con chart, and formulated discussion questions, among other activities.  A Socratic Seminar then took place where students engaged in discussion by asking and answering questions and citing specific passages in the text. All five aspects of WICOR were utilized!  AVID students had such a great time, they requested another seminar the following week, which was carried out!

Stanford University Virtual Tour

On Friday, seventh and eighth grade AVID students took a virtual tour of Stanford University. Using iPods and the Google Expeditions App, students landed 400 miles away to the Stanford campus where they explored Larkin Hall, saw the Stanford Band in action, took a peek inside the Land Reading Room, and viewed the Arrilaga Family Dining Commons. Can't wait to see where we go next!
